5 things to do before school reopening after lockdown

The first day of school is often met with some anxiousness and excitement from teachers, parents, and students, as they consider the challenges and successes, they will encounter over the course of the school year.

In just a few days, schools in India will reopen their doors to K-12 students. The first day of school is often met with some anxiousness and excitement from teachers, parents, and students, as they consider the challenges and successes, they will encounter over the course of the school year.

However, this year brings with it a whole new set of challenges. Since March 2020, the world has struggled to adapt to and deal with COVID-19, a dangerous novel virus still with many unknowns.

All the standard safety procedures are observed as children enter the school building: they pass a disinfection barrier, a thermal screening, and they sanitize their hands.

Here is a list of top 5 things to check off the list as schools reopen:

Practice safe distancing

Social distancing, or physical distancing, is the practice of allowing enough space between individuals to reduce the spread of disease. Steps to encourage social distancing during in-person schooling may include:

  • Using outdoor spaces, when possible, for instruction, meals, and recess.
  • Reducing the number of children on school buses.
  • Spacing desks out and having them all face in the same direction.
  • Dividing students up into distinct groups or cohorts that stay together during the school day and reducing interaction between different groups.

Compulsory wearing of masks and gloves

The first step to fighting the Coronavirus disease is to stop the transfer of the virus from one infected person to another, and it is possible if everyone who is out in public wears masks and gloves. Wearing masks and gloves will protect the students, staff, and teachers from contracting the disease as and when they communicate in classroom gatherings or on other occasions.

Get a head start on the new term’s subjects

Having read the syllabuses and seen what lies ahead, you might like to give yourself a head start by starting to read up on some of the things you’re going to be studying in the new term. If you’ve spotted any areas you think you might find particularly challenging, it would also be beneficial to do a bit of groundwork by reading an introduction to these areas so that you understand the basics before you start. You might also revise what you learnt in relevant subjects in previous years.

Ensure all summer homework projects are completed

If you’ve been given any homework assignments over the summer, make sure that they’re all completed, and to a high standard; there’s no excuse for handing in sloppy work when you’ve had all summer to work on it. If you can, try not to leave summer homework to the last minute. If you do, it’s bound to come across as rushed and won’t get your new school year off to a very good start. Allowing plenty of time, on the other hand, means you can complete your summer projects in a stress-free manner, producing a high standard of work that sets the tone for the new school year. Start as you mean to go on!

Check your wardrobe

You don’t want to get up for school on your first day back, only to find that all your clothes have holes in them or don’t fit you anymore, so now’s the time to buy new school clothes if any of those currently in your wardrobe are showing their age. The same goes for shoes and any other accessories you wear or carry around with you each day. Don’t forget also that you’re going into the winter, so make sure you have proper winter clothing according to school’s guidelines to get you comfortably through the colder months.

Given the unprecedented nature of this moment, no one school can or will be a beacon guiding us through reopening. No school can do it perfectly. However, we know that we are best when we work together, learn from each other, and collaborate on best practices.Students are set to enjoy the physical classes and learn the traditional way yet again.
